On March 29, 2022, Chinese Ambassador to Kuwait Li Minggang held an online farewell reception which was attended by representatives of the Chinese community in Kuwait, Chinese-funded companies, the Chinese medical assistance team to Kuwait, and Xinhua News Agency Kuwait Bureau.

In his warm remarks, Ambassador Li looked back at his work in Kuwait over the past three years, saying that with a higher level of China’s opening up, the groups of overseas Chinese have risen to be a prominent contributor to the local development of foreign countries, and the Chinese community in Kuwait is surely an important part of them. My three years and more spent in Kuwait have witnessed the journey of Chinese-funded companies to strengthen their foundation in Kuwait and become shining brand names of China. After the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, the Chinese people in Kuwait had the motherland in mind and provided active assistance with domestic fight against COVID-19. They chose to stay at their posts and tide over difficulties with their compatriots at home together, he noted, adding that wherever you go in Kuwait, you will find Chinese companies and people are often acclaimed by Kuwait’s government departments and people from all walks of life. This made him feel pretty proud and satisfied, he said.

Ambassador Li highly praised the relations between China and Kuwait, saying that despite volatility abroad, China-Kuwait relations have maintained a sound momentum with closer high-level exchanges, deeper political mutual trust and stronger practical cooperation on various fronts. Last year, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two sides. In January this year, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with his Kuwaiti counterpart Ahmad, which marks a good start of a second 50-year journey for bilateral relations. Both sides have agreed to accelerate the formulation of a five-year cooperation plan and shown confidence that bilateral relations are bound to reach new heights, he said, hoping that China-Kuwait relations will make bigger strides in the future.

Ambassador Li also expressed hearty thanks to the Chinese community in Kuwait for their support to the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait and to ambassador himself, noting that a host of activities and events organized by the embassy, ranging from the “China Night” cultural activities in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China to the logo design contest and the art contest both in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-Kuwait diplomatic relations, have been attended by many Chinese people in Kuwait. In addition, overseas Chinese groups and Chinese enterprises associations have offered great assistance with the Spring Sprout program to the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait. China-Kuwait friendship cannot be advanced without the care and efforts of overseas Chinese, he stressed, and hoped they will continue to play as ambassadors for friendly people-to-people exchanges between the two sides.

A short video about Ambassador Li’s work and life in Kuwait was played at the reception and was warmly received by all those present who commended the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait on its commitment to people-centered diplomacy and its role as a strong backing for overseas Chinese. They appreciated Ambassador Li’s great efforts to advance bilateral relations and safeguard the rights and interests of Chinese people in Kuwait, and wished Ambassador Li the best and China-Kuwait relations a brighter future.
